Greg, Kevin, did you go out and shoot Greg's new toy? Or did you guys wimp out due to weather? Give us a clue.

We did indeed go out an shoot at McMiller Sports Center on Sunday. The weather was cloudy and cold at a brisk 24 degrees F.
We got there about 12:30 and after paying our $15 for all day range use we headed over to the 50/100 yard range and got situated. I put the bipod on the rifle and Kevin put a clamp on that I gave him to try out on his Father's Rug 10/22.
We both worked from at the 50 yard targets for the duration of our stay. We also both had some problems with the elevation of the benches and the chairs.
The first ammo I tried out was CCI Small Game Bullet which were 40gr flat nose. After a 5 shot clip to sight in which worked out rather well and was on paper first shot, I fired 5 at a 1" circle target and put all 5 rounds in it with three in the same hole. Little did I know that would be the best shooting of the day for me. Be that as it may I will say that the gun seems to work just fine. I did have some problems with feeding rounds for the first 30 rounds but it worked itself out afterwards with no feeding or firing problems with the exception of one round of Remington Match that FTF. Between trying different loads and the numbness of my fingers I'll just say that it was a "break in" day for the Savage. I had two other loads that did fairly well but considering how much trouble I was having keeping my fingers and toes warm and trying to stay comfortable with an AK sniper rifle firing two benches away, I'm fairly certain it will do just fine and be able keep 1" groups at 100 yards with more practice and break in with the right ammo.
It did NOT like Remington Match, Aguila Sniper Sub-Sonic, .22 Thunderbolt or Peters. I got "ok" results from Eley Match, Wolf, CCI High Velocity, Federal Bulk and Fiocchi. I got "good" results from Federal Spitfire.
Kevin plinked away with his Dad's 10/22 and was getting decent groups for using an older model 4X scope. He's decided that it is getting new glass and soon. After seeing his groups and what was going on, I agree. New glass should help considerably.
That is really about all I can say for now. We had a GOOD time, broke in the new rifle a bit and learned a couple things as well. We finished off the day with a trip to our favorite local place, The BoneYard. A few 16oz. drinks and Hot Wings were consumed and many were driven away in fear from the online Texas Hold 'em that can be played remotely at the place.
Feel free to ask questions if you want.

Greg got lucky with the initail sighting of his new toy. He was going to use a lazer bore sight but the batteries were dead or just to cold for the batteries.
Besides listening to him complain about some of the crappy rounds that he bought for testing / breakin, I had to deal with his complaining about how cold he was. I personally did not think it was that bad. We were under the standard target range building that blocked the majority of the wind. Every 15 minutes we got walk out to the targets which got the blood flowing to the fingers and toes. I would have put him in the truck to warmup if his fingers started turning blue.
As for my shooting I did not think it was to bad considering what I had to work with. Shooting at a 50yd target with a 4.5x scope and trying to maintain some kind of a pattern is a challenge. I was not going to win a trophies with my shooting but at least I never missed the paper. The Ruger 10-22 will soon get a new 4-16x scope which should help improve my accuracy.
Randy sorry it is to cold for you to get anywhere to shoot. I guess telling you to man-up an deal with would just be a waste of mine time. If Greg can handle the low temps for 3 hours so can you.

I will be interested to get your take on the squirrel killing ability of the G22 at Pepprdog's this year. It is quite nice even though BigAl sucks at shooting stuff.

My rifle likes the CCI Mini-Mag better than anything I've found. With the 22, the really high & low velosity stuff doesn't seem to work so accurately in most guns. CCI seems to make the most consistant ammo that's generally available. that's what I've read and my results seem to agree.

Will keep your findings on my mind Pepper.
Al, I've done a fair amount of research on that very gun! I'd have to say right off the bat that as long as it can hit the mark at "said" distance, it will be just as good as any other .22 rifle when it comes to killing squirrels. It has several differences from standard rifles that I would think would make it a good choice for such activity.

OK Kevin, I'm a candy ass and can't hang when it's too cold or wet. Remember where I live. You Ice People are expected to freeze your ass's off, it's in your DNA. Just remember I'm a interesting craphead. I spent 20 years in the Navy and you have more sea time then me.
