Had my first MRI today. They stuck me in the tube and shot pictures. DAMN! Is that thing loud! They put headphones on me that bairly dampened the sound. They said there was music in the headphones but the machine was so loud, I couldn't hear any tunes.
My doc called later in the day and said "Rob, you really f@cked up your knee this time." I have a torn ACL and a torn MCL. Now I have to get on the Internet and look this up. I think the ACL holds the thigh bone to the shin bone inside the knee and the MCL does the same think from one of the sides. So this joint is roached... For a while anyway. I see the OD surgen next Wednesday to see what the options are. I sure don't want to be laid up all Summer.

Get used to looking like your avatar....sitting, with the leg up & finger in the air. These take a bit of time to heal after surgery unless you are really lucky. & GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'd sure hate to be around your household if you're immobile for too long...heh, heh.....

Welcome to my world. The wonders they can do now, limited invasive repair, artificial joints, and such, you will not be down long. Hell, they cut me first time, wheeled me back to the room, I woke up, told the nurse had to pee, and she pointed to the latrine...yes I had to get up and hobble. Actually takes about 1 week to get used to it, get strength up, and start moving. Not an all summer exercise 6 weeks if you stay on the rehab schedule.
Pain free and can jog a tad....Duke or Beau the bassets pulling me along for "motivation". Climbed hills, and over stuff that I haven't done in years, just can't flat run anymore.....other than that I am 85-90%, and lovin it.

The knee bones connected to the ... Pain Bone.... The pain Bone's connected to the ...... Brain Bone. Some IPA 90's will fix that connection between the Pain and Brain. Talk to DarkKnight about it, he just went through it all.
We will put you on the Lil Red ATV and you can pretend you are Lord of Discipline/Ref/ or simply a "drive by target". If that fails, we have plenty of chairs.
I still have some of the "Happy pills" too, plenty enough to get you through the weekend, but, you'll need some methadone on the downside.
Heel up! oh wait, that's the dog....
Heal UP!

I must have missed something. What the heck did you do, Rock? Bum knees suck. Granted, mine could be a lot worse, like OS'es, but once that chronic ache sets in, it's all downhill from there. Looking at surgery #3 myself in the not too distant future, and not looking forward to it.

I believe the torn ACL is from the Sturgis Bike Rally of '81 but I'm not sure. We partied hard all night, got a couple hours sleep, and got up to beers and baloney sandwitches... I went to kick over the Sportster and failed to follow the protocol of finding the compression stroke first. The ratchet didn't catch and I came down full weight. The kicker just flipped around and my knee blew up. I stayed drunk that week so it wouldn't hurt so bad. Been living with it ever since I guess. Never got it checked out by a doctor until now. Its usually always in the back of my mind to keep the muscles tights around my knee when I'm playing paintball or doing karate. The braces help too. And speaking of karate, that's how the MCL went. We were doing self defense and flips. Well, it was my turn to go over the top. I landed correct. On my left side, left arm out, left leg out. My right thigh was up in the air where it was suppose to be, but the bottom part of my right leg whipped on impact. There was a snap... No I didn't have my braces on. I figured I'd just hurt it again like I do every once in a while (remember AAPP?). But this time it didn't get better after a week. Or two weeks. Or three weeks. Or four weeks. So I finally went to have it checked out and find that both the ACL and MCL are split. No wonder I wobbled when I walked. I thought it was the Cheap Red Wine.

I still have some very nice.....feel no pain drugs that I do not need anymore.......
Get it done and "force" the issue if needbe, Dr's tend to hem and hah at what is actually needed and try several simple fixes before doing what has to be done. With both ACL and MCL damaged, and if "repaired" you will not have the strength in the scarred tissue, and cadaver replacements are only 70%. I did not even have an ACL in the right knee and the resulting continual damage wrought led to what I had to do. DO NOT go for the "chicken goop" replacement of maniscus(sp?) they will try and sell that see if it works to prevent damage method, hassel and it did not work on either of mine.

Damn!! But actually better than what my first thought was when I the subject line. Blown knee is definetly easier to deal with than cancer. To many family and freinds in recent years have been lost to that one.
Seriously though, I hope that you've got a doctor that specializes in sports related reconstruction. There is one in St Joseph, MO that is one of the top surgeons in this field. I've a friend that had a hip replaced a couple of years ago and is able to ride again. Before the fix she could hardly walk.
Good luck and get better

Surgery is April 28th. The MCL will heal itself and should be complete by then. The ACL will take some bubblegum and bailing wire. I'll need to stock up on Jack and Dogfish 90's. I'll be on the couch for a few days. The good news is I'm having a Cleveland Clinic Sports Medicine orthopedic surgeon do the work. He does work for the pro teams around here too. Rehab starts right away. The bad news is 6 to 8 months of rehab. Crutches for about the first 6 weeks.

Why so long on rehab? Muscle/ligament damage that bad, or are they changing muscle memory to before injury. Everyone tends to change muscle posture with an injury, I did not walk with straight knees for years, that took the longest, learning how to walk...again. I was up and movin in less than six with both replaced, something is differant here.

I don't think his "rehab" is that protracted, but he won't be able to return to work until August. The nature of his job I guess...
Knowing Kenny's luck, his first day back on the squad, he'll have to run on a 300lb woman who lives on the fourth floor of a building with really narrow stairs...

Sorry about the knee brother - just getting back up to half speed after my 2 surgeries in the last 1.5 yr. Get the surgery done soon - then get on with the rehab and continue to do it afterwards at home. Gotta strengthen the joint best that you can. Oh and be nice to the wife and kids - they will be your best friends when you are on crutches. Hope that you aren't off your feet too long - hope that you still come out if you can - the little red atv and beers will be waiting
